Take A Look ?

The Curriculum of each the programme was developed by a team of academics, Oil and Gas specialists and Subject Matter Experts (SME). This ensured that the curriculum meets the highest standards of the University and in line with the latest concepts and developments in the oil, gas and energy industry. Benchmarking with international institutions was also done to ensure quality. Professional bodies (SPE, NAPE and SEG) were engaged and have all endorsed the programmes. Regular appraisals are carried out with the view to keep pace with the latest technological developments and standards in both the industry and academia.  As part of this, both students and staff participate actively in seminars, workshops, local and international professional conferences every year.  Both staff and students of the Centre are active members of SPE, NAPE and SEG at the local and international levels.

Masters Programme

The Centre offers Master’s degree in:

Integrated Petroleum Exploration and Evaluation Studies (Geology Option)
•Integrated Petroleum Exploration and Evaluation Studies (Geophysics Option)
•Integrated Petroleum Engineering and Production Studies

These programmes are aimed at developing skilled professionals in all key areas in the Oil and Gas sector (Exploration, Appraisal, Development and Production) including Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering. On graduation, the students would have acquired the requisite skills to make them function effectively in the industry as young professionals with minimal industrial new-hire training. The training programmes offered at the Centre ensure that the graduates are well equipped with the in-depth knowledge of the up-to-date concepts and skills, current technologies and methods.
Team working, communication and leadership abilities are part of the emphasis. These make the graduates functional and productive in the multi-dimensional work place environment. Significant emphasis is placed on multidisciplinary approach necessary for solving integrated subsurface problems in Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering. Self-development training forms an integral part of the programme, designed to mould the students with the right attitudes and behaviour that are important in the industry workplace. These enable the students reach their full potentials. These soft skill sets are delivered by professionals from the Oil and Gas Companies as well as a well-chosen set of successful individuals with active industry and academic experience who can be seen as ‘role models’ and mentors.
The excellent facilities available at the Centre, as well as the overall design of the program courses, the delivery framework which has been benchmarked to meet the highest international standards, as well as the active participation of the industry Subject Matter Experts give CoE a unique and competitive edge. In today’s competitive world, the right blend of learning objectives embedded in the curriculum of programs offered in the Centre and backed up with the latest technologies enable CoE to deliver quality and excellent learning for students that can compete favourably in the global market at the end of their training.
The Master’s programmes are structured in such a way that all students undertake fundamental courses in Petroleum Geology, Petroleum Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering, Geological and Geophysical field work, including leadership and self-development training, environmental management, safety and GIS in Oil and Gas operations in the first six months of the programme. They also undergo compulsory hands-on training on Petrel Geophysical Interpretation, Techlog Fundamentals, Intersect Reservoir Simulation and Computer Programming during this period. The students are subjected to intense coaching in the core disciplines of Geology, Geophysics and Petroleum Engineering in the second six months of their study.

The Doctoral programme leading to the award of the Doctor of Philosophy degree of the University of Benin in the above areas is by Research Project and Dissertation, and commences after any required or recommended course has been successfully completed by the student. Such recommendation is based on the advice of a Research Advisory Board, and premixed on the evaluation of the background of the student. Duration of study is 36 – 48 months.
The doctoral programme of the Centre of Excellence in Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering, University of Benin, is centered on developing the ability of the students to connect-the-dots between classroom lessons and their real-world applications through professional development and research opportunities. The programmes are designed to provide advanced science and/or engineering education and inclusive experience that are industry oriented as well as academics, which will provide graduates the opportunity to develop into strong science or engineering professionals, applied researchers, managers and advocates of technology. Areas of research needs by industry with short to medium term applications are the focus of the programmes, and these shall always be sought after by strong stakeholder interface management.
The doctoral programmes are aimed towards:
•Production of high calibre of specialists in various options of the Earth Sciences, Petroleum Engineering Production and Energy Resources and Management
•Developing knowledgeable and high-level researchers and professional practitioners who can stand on their own to generate and execute current research definitions and solutions to practical problems.
•Lastly the programme design is also aimed at infusing the right analytical and logical skills in both originality and content, with appreciation of cooperative multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary and analytical research methods, as well as critical mind set
